Deepavali, the festival of lights was celebrated at the Central Prison for women, Shivamogga, on Tuesday, 7th of November 2023 by the volunteers from the Prison Ministry of India, Shimoga Diocese. The PMI volunteers along with a few staff members and children from Mary Immaculate Higher Primary School took part in the celebrations.

Sr Elize Lourdh SCB welcomed the gathering.  She explained the meaning of Deepavali and how important for us to celebrate the festival of lights in India. Kumari Hemavathy, the Superintendent of the Prison expressed her happiness at the presence of the volunteers who had happily come to to share the Deepavali joy with the inmates. She was happy with the programme presented by the Children of Mary Immaculate school and appreciated their talents. 

Sr Lilly Thomas and Mrs Alphonsa addressed the inmates and explained the meaning of light and how it removes darkness from within us. Mrs Erudhaya Mary sponsored the sweets, eatables and fruits to be given to the inmates.   The cultural programme presented by the children was appreciated by everyone.
