Shivamogga, May 11, 2025: The Diocesan Catechetical and Biblical Commission conducted a five-day Diocesan Summer Camp for tenth-grade students of the Shimoga Diocese at the Sannidhi Pastoral Centre, May 4–8, 2025. One hundred seventeen students from the diocese's four deaneries participated in this spiritually enriching program, which served as a positive influence on their lives.
Bishop Francis Serrao, S.J., of Shimoga, officially opened the camp, lighting the ceremonial lamp and addressing the students. He encouraged them to flourish and overcome obstacles. Fr. Santhosh D'Almeida, Subhoda Director, extended a warm welcome to all dignitaries and participants.
The camp featured numerous insightful sessions presented by distinguished experts, each contributing meaningfully to the students' future development.
The key sessions are: Post-SSLC Options; Competitive Examinations for Government Positions; and Strategies for Stress-Free Exam Preparation, presented by Mr. Ronald Pinto. Media and Youth, by Fr. Vinuth Balu Kumar. Goal setting, time management, self-awareness, effective use of media, the right use of friendship, discernment techniques, and the role of positive thinking in a world of negativity, by Fr. Joyson Vaz SJ. Employability skills, by Mr. Francis D'Souza. Activity-based learning on leadership skills, by Fr. Roman Pinto. Motivation, by Bishop Francis Serrao SJ. Vocation to serve the Lord as priests and religious in the Church, by Fr. Franklin D'Souza, Fr. Adarsh, and Fr. William.
The camp facilitated spiritual growth for students through meditative practices and daily Holy Eucharist celebrations. Structured group activities, outdoor recreation, and cultural programs promoted teamwork, sportsmanship, and well-rounded development. Fr. Venil D'Silva was the coordinator of the camp.
Fr. Nishanth Anthony D'Costa, Br. Melroy D'Silva, Sr. Lenita AC, Sr. Jovita AC, Sr. Sheela HCM, Sr. Arpitha Mary HCM, Sr. Alphina FDM, Sr. Reena Joy FDM, Sr. Rekha SRA, and Sr. Shanthi SRA provided invaluable support to the organizing team and students, facilitating group engagement, spiritual exercises, and various activities. Sannidhi Pastoral Renewal Centre Director Fr Clifford Roshan Pinto together with his team made food and lodging arrangements.
The camp culminated in a meaningful closing ceremony on May 8th at 12:30 PM. Most Reverend Dr. Francis Serrao SJ, Bishop of the Diocese of Shimoga, presented certificates to all participants and offered his best wishes. Students expressed their gratitude to all the priests, brothers, and sisters who provided support throughout the camp. The experience proved highly beneficial, fostering the faith and spirit of the young participants and encouraging their growth as active members of the Church and society.
