EDUCATION MINISTRY

All people seek truth. In particular all the baptised are in need of an education that fosters their maturity both as human beings and as children of God. "This education should be suitable to the particular destiny of the individuals, adapted to their ability, sex and should be conducive to fraternal relations in order to promote true unity and peace in the world" (GE 2).The Church is bound as a mother to give to these children of hers an education by which their whole life can be imbued with the spirit of Christ. The Church does whatever she can to promote for all people the complete perfection of the human person, the good of earthly society and the building of a world that is more human (GE 2). Considering the poor state of education in our Diocese, the Church has the duty to improve its quality.

"The parents have to educate their children according to the doctrine handed on by the Church" (GE 7). Students and teachers have a freedom of inquiry and expression in the Church with the goal of bringing the faithful to a more refined and more mature life of faith. The objectives of the education system are to intensify the efforts to promote primary education and to improve the quality of our schools and teachers academically. They must become agents of change.

Catholic schools play an important role in evangelisation, teaching the ways of openness and respect, and fostering inter-religious understanding GE 3). Catholic education must become still more clearly directed towards human promotion, providing an environment where students receive not only the formal elements of schooling but, more broadly, "an integral human formation" (GE 1) based upon the teachings of Christ. Catholic schools should continue to be places where faith can be freely proposed and received.

Commission Action Plan

Education policy has to be renewed and upgraded to meet the exigencies of the present day society and to make it relevant to the present time.
Pastors are obliged to arrange for the Catholic education giving special importance to educate Catholic children while working for literacy for all. Our aim is to have a Catholic school in every mission unit. Efforts are to be made to upgrade the existing higher primary and high schools. Parish priests have a grave responsibility to ensure that every Catholic child is given education in our schools upto Std.X.

Catechetical instruction for catholic children and Value Education for all students should be an integral part of the school curriculum by including at least two periods of such classes per week. Regular retreats for all students should be conducted at the school level to give a spiritual and moral touch to the education. Children's rights education and child friendly orientation is to be introduced in all our educational institutions.

Family life education is to be imparted in a graded manner by well trained teachers with the help of Diocesan Family Welfare Centre in our schools and colleges to make family life, respect for life and gender equality an integral part of our educational system.

Catholic educational institutions should encourage an appropriate celebration of the major religious festivals of other faiths to enhance harmony and understanding.

An orientation programme has to be conducted for the newly appointed teachers in our schools to familiarise them with the aims and objectives of Catholic education. All teachers of our diocesan schools are to be given necessary training in value education and human formation so that the educational institution itself becomes a community of love. In each school one or two teachers are to be trained at counselling so that they can guide students in distress.

An Educational Society is to be set up at the diocesan level to coordinate various activities pertaining to education and educational institutions. The Educational Society should be vigilant towards the educational policies of the government and to enhance the quality of education in our diocesan and religious schools.

The Educational Society should take greater interest in rural schools to upgrade their standards. The Educational Society with the help of affluent schools must help/adopt poor schools in mission units and rural areas in consultation with and the permission of the diocesan Bishop.

Study spaces should be made available in the school premises for poor children in the evenings. Remedial coaching classes are to be conducted for weaker students.

Efforts are to be made to give adequate career guidance, vocational and leadership training to high school and college students. Considering the situation of unemployment in our country, vocational courses are to be introduced in our schools and colleges as it opens new avenues for useful employment.

Boarding and hostel facilities are to be made available to the poor children from villages and mission areas for their higher education.

All our Catholic schools should have preferential option for the poor students and establish Book Banks to help such students. Provision should be made for slow learners, school dropouts and especially child labourers.

An Education Fund has to be set up for Catholic students pursuing higher education with the collaboration of Shimoga Multi- purpose Social Service Society.
