In commemoration of the Jubilee Year 2025, the Health Commission of the Shimogga Diocese organized a special event for healthcare workers on May 25, 2025, at Sannidhi, the Diocesan Pastoral Renewal Centre in Shimogga. The gathering commenced with a prayer service centered on the theme: “We are called and gifted by our God.”
Fr. Simon Pinto, the Coordinator of all diocesan commissions, extended a warm welcome to the attendees.
Sr. Judy Saldanha, Secretary of the Health Commission, delivered the keynote address. She emphasized the compassionate approach required in healthcare, stating, “We serve not just the body but the whole person—body and soul.” She highlighted the importance of addressing both physical and emotional wounds, acknowledging the challenges faced in the healing ministry, and underscoring the need for patience, compassion, and faith. Sr. Judy expressed gratitude towards all healthcare workers in the diocese for their invaluable service.
The day's resource person, Rev. Fr. Santhosh Dias, National Executive Secretary of the CBCI Office for Healthcare, spoke on the apostolic nature of healthcare in the Catholic Church. He reminded the attendees that their work is a continuation of God’s healing mission, urging them to provide holistic care and to witness the Gospel through both words and actions.
In his message, Most Rev. Francis Serrao, Bishop of Shimogga, reflected on the significance of the Jubilee Year 2025. He drew parallels between the work of healthcare professionals and the love demonstrated by Jesus on the cross, highlighting the profound impact of compassionate care. The Bishop encouraged future gatherings and invited suggestions on advancing the healing ministry within the diocese. He also expressed appreciation for organizing the first-ever diocesan-wide assembly of healthcare workers.
The program concluded with a concelebrated Eucharistic celebration led by the Bishop, followed by a communal meal. Approximately 80 participants attended the event, engaging in meaningful interactions with fellow professionals and departing with renewed spirit and joy.
