History

St. Mary's Community Harihar
St. Mary's Convent at Harihar, was established in the year 1978. Sr. Leonora was in charge of the first community. The Carmelite Sisters of St. Teresa (CSST), were full of zeal, desired to have the Christian presence and spread the Good News of Jesus, in Harihar.  So they arrived all the way from Ernakulam to begin their mission. The Sisters began their life with rendering service in shrine, of our lady's health Church,  visiting the families, teaching Catechism and helping people to pray. Later they felt the need of education of children. So they started the Kannada Primary school. We thank the Almighty for all His blessings in our endeavours.

History

Nisarga a Branch of Franciscan Sisters of Mary was started in Hosadurga, Chitradurga District, Karnataka State on June 14th 1998 by Sr.Levenis D’Souza , Sr. Theresa Martis, Sr. Mary Thomos and Sr. Stella Gnanapraksham. A general survey of the taluk showed that Hosadurga is

  • Lack facilities of Health, Hygiene and Sanitation
  • High illiteracy specially among women
  • High school drop outs / Child labour
  • Gender discrimination
  • Caste system
  • Poverty
  • Migration
  • Superstitious beliefs etc.,

Above all it is a place where Christ is least known. To fulfil our mission and to reach out to the target group, we organize Community Based Organizations (CBO) such as women and youth self help groups, Children’s club, and Self Help groups for Disabled, Federations of SHGs, Farmers Groups, Farmers clubs, Joint liability groups, Tank users groups, Watershed committees and Common Interest Groups. With the participatory approach, we together with the people work for the development of the village community, protection and promotion of the environment and ecology. Today our work area is extends to whole of Hosadurga and Holalkere taluks.

The vision of Nisarga is “to live in minority, simplicity and joy, bringing reconciliation, peace and freedom to all. We are called to build up the women, youth, children, land less labourers and small agricultural farmers of the society and strive to build them into a self-confident and courageous people with a better self-image, holistic health, environmental protection and equip them well to face the challenges of life”.

OBJECTIVES OF NISARGA:

  • Promotion of Community Based Organizations and their Capacity building.
  • Prevention of School drop outs/ bonded labourers /trafficking of children
  • Promotion of Education
  • Taking up social issues of women and village community
  • Implementation of Watershed programme
  • Promotion of Environment / Ecology
  • Promotion of Health, hygiene and sanitation
  • Networking with Governmental & Non Governmental organizations.

Above all our main objective is to inculcate the values of Christ in the people where Christ is least known rather not know at all. There are only 8 Catholic families, 31% Muslims, 4% Jains and the rest are Hindus.

Holy Redeemer Convent    Hosanagar
Sisters of Charity of St.Bartholomea  Capitanio & St.  Vincenza Gerosa. (SCCG)
Also  called   Sisters of  Maria Bambina.
Mother House          -  Milan   -Italy
Mission                   -  Education, Socio-Pastoral   Services.
Established             -  1990
Classes                   -  LK   to  II year P.U.C.   ( Kannada & English Medium)

The Dynamic   Charity of Christ  our Redeemer  drove the  Sisters  of Charity   of  Sts Bartholomea Capitanio   and Vincenza Gerosa, in every direction across the oceans, mountains, hills & valleys  to proclaim  the redeeming love  of Christ.  For  this reason   a call of the Lord  came through  the Bishop of Shimoga, Most  Rev. Ignatius Pinto,  to the    provincial   superior of     Mangalore  Province  Sr.Maurelia   Pinto ,  with a request  to send sisters  to a small town of Hosanagar.

Thus Holy Redeemer Convent was  erected on 29th June  1990 in order  to  cater  to the needs  of the people of   Hosanagar. The     primary   need  being education,  health care and  upliftment  of the women, a kindergarten   school, a small dispensary   and a tailoring   unit were  opened on temporary basis. Since the Govt.hospital soon improved its services by equipping with good medical facilities, the little dispensary was given up. A good number of women and young girls of the village learnt tailoring and their number reduced to nothing. So the tailoring unit was closed. Since, apart from the Govt. school there are no good institutions, greater emphasis has been laid on educational apostolate. Year by year the school was upgraded   and it has reached to P.U.C . A girls' hostel for high school and P.U.C is started on 1.6.2006 after seeing the needs of the students. The community is also engaged in parish pastoral work.

History

THE ASSISI CONVENT, THIRTHAHALLI
Thirthahalli in local language means “a pure village”. It comes under Shimaoga Diocese. It has a sizeable catholic population and the Our Lady of Lourdes is the patron saint of the Parish. Sensing the spiritual needs of the growing number of Christians most of whom are Konkani speaking, and have migrated from Mangalore, the then Bishop invited the Ursuline Franciscan Sisters. They were known for their work in Pastoral and educational field. The Ursuline Franciscan congregation was founded in 1887 on April 10, on Easter Sunday, in the Roasario Catherdral parish of Mangalore by Fr. Urban Stein’s and St. Angela. True to its motto “FOR THE LOVE OF GOD” soon it spread throughout Karnataka. In responding to Bishop’s call, sisters formally came to Thirthahalli in 1956. And On November 3rd they established a Convent and named it after their patron St. Francis of Assisi.  Sr. Mary Anneas a superior and srs Anecitus andEdelfi were the first pioneers of this mission.

Ursiline mission in Thirthahlli comes under the Mysore province. Over a period of time their simple life-style and unassuming ways of mixing with the poor has made an unforgettable mark in the hearts and minds of the people. As a sign of their life of commitment and service, over the years many have responded to God’s call. Today Ursuline Franciscans mission in Thithahalli includes a Kannada and an English medium school. At present the Assisi Convent has twelve sisters and continues to render its service in looking after the pastoral and educational needs of the locals.

The arrival of the ursuline sisters of Mary immaculate to Shimoga diocese was in the year 1989 at the request of Fr. Joachim D'Souza who wanted sisters to take up the ministry of Education in the school established by him in this mission station. The sisters not only revived the standard of the school but also were responsible for its upgradation to English Medium Highschool and in procuring government aid for the Kannada medium primary school. The sisters also got involved in direct evangelisation of people at Thimmappanahalli in the year 1992 and were instrumental in the initiation of a Catholic community in the village. The  Janapriya Social center that  was started in the year 1998, is actively involved in the empowerment of women and children in 15 villages of Challakere Taluka

JOTHI NIVAS CONVENT, Kargal (2003)
The Congregation of the Ursuline Sisters of the Blessed St. Virgin Mary was founded by Venerable Anne de Xainctonage on 16th June 1606 in Dole in France.

Anne de Xainctonage was born on 21st Nov 1567 in a noble family. As she grew up she became keenly aware of the religious ignorance of women and girls of her time. After a deep God experience, her vision and   mission became  clearer to her, to light the lamp of FAITH in the hearts and minds of young girls and women especially the poor through the medium of education- Chrism Faith formation through Education.

The source of her strength and endurance was Jesus Christ. Her motto was “Christ is My Life”  Though Anne de Xainctonage died in 1621 at the Age of 54, the society of St.Ursula spread in different part of Europe, America & Africa during her life time. Three Swiss Sisters from the Mother House Brig came to India – Maharashtra, in the Diocese of Pune at the invitation of Rt. Rev. Bishop Andrew D’Souza then Bishop of the Diocese.
Besides formal Education in Schools, we are involved in Medical, Social and Pastoral Apostates in the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Goa and Rumania.
