Silver Jubilee Celebrations of the Diocese

Shimoga: September 01, 2014:

TO ALL THE PRIESTS, BROTHERS, THE RELIGIOUS AND LAY FAITHFUL OF THE DIOCESE OF SHIMOGA

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Greetings from Mallige Mane

The main purpose of this letter is to remind you of an important mile stone in the history of this young diocese. You are aware that the Holy Father Pope John Paul II established the Shimoga Diocese on 14 November 1988. As such the diocese completes 26 years of its existence this year. In the fitness of things the Silver Jubilee of the diocese should have been celebrated last year. But since the Diocese was vacant last year it was postponed. Now that the Diocese has a Bishop it has been decided to have the Silver Jubilee celebrations this year. Accordingly, we will have a solemn thanksgiving Eucharist in the sacred Heart Cathedral at 4 pm on Sunday, 16 November 2014 followed by a short felicitation-cum-cultural programme and fellowship meal for all. Most of the Bishops of Karnataka will join us on this important occasion.

It is our wish that this celebration will be mainly centred on thanking and praising the good Lord for His unfailing presence with and protection of us during the past 26 years. Hence there will be a minimum of external show and a lot of emphasis on interior renewal. It is my desire that this event should be marked by the widest possible participation of all the faithful of the diocese, clergy and the laity, the diocesans and the religious, men and women, adults and children. Therefore I will soon send around a prayer on the occasion of the silver Jubilee, to be recited together in our parishes. I also request the Parish Priests and Heads of institutions to make arrangements for as many of our people as possible to come to Shimoga and take part in the programme.

You know very well, dear Brothers and Sisters, that a Jubilee is first and foremost a spiritual event. The Bible teaches us that the jubilee year is a time of special grace from God. It is a time for conversion, renewal and re-dedication. It is a time to look back with thanksgiving and repentance; to look at the present with satisfaction and critical evaluation; to look ahead with hope and confidence.

Therefore I request our Parish priests and Heads of Institutions as well as the Superiors of Religious Communities to initiate from now on a process of spiritual preparation for the Jubilee Day. I would be most happy to have reports of how this spiritual preparation is going on.

Therefore, dear Brothers and Sisters, let us as one, united diocesan family, walk together towards the Jubilee day and invest ourselves totally in its celebration and dedicate ourselves to reap a rich spiritual harvest for the Diocese from this moment of grace, the Kairos.

This letter will kindly be read out to the assembled faithful at all principal masses on Sunday 07 September 2014 in all our parishes, sub-stations and Missions.

Given in Shimoga on 01 September 2014

+ Francis Serrao SJ
Bishop of Shimoga
